13 So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves. 14 When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!”
20 but He called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here!”
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.
Main Point: In the middle of impossibilities and deep questions, Jesus is always present and our source of confidence.
John 6 begins with a tangible example of what many of us experience on a daily basis. We are confronted with situations and circumstances that seem impossible. Sooner or later, your faith will be tested. One certainty you can take for 2020 is that tests will come.
We can put ourselves in the shoes of the disciples when they are confronted with feeding the multitudes numbering over 5,000 people (v.10) and with the storm at sea (v.18). When confronted with extreme opposition or insurmountable odds we are left with two choices, either grit our teeth and fight harder or bring what we have to Jesus. Philip says working for months still would be insufficient, but Andrew responds by bringing what is available (the 5 loaves and 2 fish). Jesus shows out by surpassing what is needed and surpassing expectations. This carries on to the storm at sea. In the midst of the most dire circumstances, we all ask the question, “God where are you?” Verse 20 provides a resounding reply from Jesus, “Don’t be afraid, I am here!”
The chapter concludes with more questions being raised about the identity of Jesus. The crowds ask for a sign they can see with physical eyes to believe, Jesus replies with a statement of faith (spiritual eyes). He reveals that He is the “bread of life”, the ultimate source of sustenance and satisfaction. Many circumstances will cause us to question where our hope for fulfillment is placed, Jesus reveals that He is the only viable answer to these questions.
Deeper Focus:
What are you facing that seems impossible or extremely difficult this year?
What typically happens when you start to feel afraid, due to circumstances of situations?
What does it mean to you for Jesus to be your “bread” (source of sustenance)?
Spend a few moments praying. Ask God to show you how He is both with you in fearful situations and the answer to your heart’s innermost longing.
