6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Main Point: Seeing Jesus gives clear direction
Have you ever been lost before? Nowadays, with Waze and all sorts of maps on your phone, it’s much harder to remember the feeling. However, imagine really being lost with no options of a quickfix. In this position, a lot of us may keep on driving while waiting for something to look familiar or to stumble upon the right turn to make. The other, more keen portion of us, may stop and ask for directions. The goal remains consistent though, finding the way to your desired destination.
In John 14, we can easily relate to the question posed by the disciple Thomas. Jesus is sharing some deep thoughts about heaven and preparing an eternal home for us, but Thomas admits he’s confused and asks for directions. How often are we left in this position, trying to gain more clarity from Jesus? I think we can learn something from Thomas about bringing our questions directly to Jesus.
Jesus’ response is everything that everyone in the world needs to know. Multiple times throughout 2020, we will be looking for peace, hope, satisfaction, an answer to how we find an eternal home. Jesus gives a resounding answer in chapter 14, “I am the way, the truth and the life!” Many times we feel far away from God, but Jesus lets us know He is the only way to the Father God and if we’ve seen Him, we have seen the Father. Find comfort in Jesus reassuring the disciples He is the way back to relationship with God and not to be troubled because He’s left us peace. There is no other way to eternal life than a clear sight of Jesus.
Deeper Focus:
- Do you currently feel lost in any areas of life or distant from God?
- Bring anything that comes to mind to God today, just as Thomas did.
- What does Jesus being the way mean to your life today?
- Jesus intends to leave us the gift of peace, the Holy Spirit as comfort and His words in chapter 14 as a clear indicator of His love for and desire to be with us. Let’s reflect on these offerings throughout today.
