DAY 1: John chapter 1

9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”

‭‭John‬ ‭1:9-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’ 31 I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.”

John 1:29-31

Main Point/Reflection: Sufficient light brings proper sight.

Have you ever felt like you were wandering, alone in the darkness, lost? Many of us have felt this way in regards to a relationship, a job or school not turning out how we imagined. Possibly a sickness or the loss of a loved one has caused a season of darkness. There are countless variables outside of our control that can suffocate and make us feel trapped in an ever shrinking box.

However, John 1 begins with an emphasis on light. The struggle is, how can we find light when only darkness seems present? Verse 9 offers a truth that confronts us in that very place: “The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.”

John makes it clear, Jesus is true light and He desires to give light to all willing to believe.

Later in the chapter, John the Baptist makes further bold declarations about Jesus’ identity. We see John the Baptist sharing his own process of Jesus bringing light and illuminating his understanding, when he saw Jesus coming towards him. (v.31-34) John shares the key to our proper vision, Jesus being revealed as the chosen one of God, and only one who takes away our sin. True light brings an understanding of Jesus’ identity.

Deeper Focus:

- Do any areas feel dark in your life currently? If so, take a few moments and share them with God in prayer.

- What vision do you have of who Jesus is? What attributes, descriptors or titles come to mind?

- What would you like to have revealed to you in 2020?
